Philis Bakery: A Story of Resilience, Entrepreneurship and Community Impact

Born and raised in Amahlongwa, KwaZulu-Natal, Philisiwe Shabalala's entrepreneurial journey began at a young age with a simple dream and limited resources. Using a paraffin stove and a pot, she baked cakes for birthday celebrations within her community. What started as a small way to earn extra income soon became an opportunity to support her family, as the money she earned helped contribute to household needs.

Her passion for baking continued into adulthood. At the age of 18, she pursued baking more seriously before stepping away for a period. However, her entrepreneurial spirit never faded. As she matured, she recognised the potential of baking not only as a skill but as a sustainable business that could create opportunities for herself and others.

The journey was far from easy. Starting a business without capital presented significant challenges. Coming from a family with no history of entrepreneurship, she often found herself navigating unfamiliar territory with limited support. Like many Black South Africans, she grew up in an environment where formal employment was viewed as the primary path to success, making the decision to build a business both courageous and unconventional.

A defining moment came in 2016, when she won a competition and used the prize money to purchase an oven. That investment laid the foundation for what would become Philis Bakery. From those humble beginnings, the business steadily grew into a respected local bakery serving the Amahlongwa community.

Today, Philis Bakery plays an important role in the local economy by providing fresh, affordable bread and baked goods while contributing to job creation and economic activity. The bakery has helped improve livelihoods and continues to demonstrate how small businesses can make a meaningful impact within rural communities.

Despite the progress made, challenges remain. Access to larger markets and growth opportunities continues to be one of the biggest obstacles facing the business. Nevertheless, Shabalala remains committed to expanding operations and creating greater opportunities for her community.

Her vision for the future is ambitious and inspiring. She aims to grow Philis Bakery into a large-scale operation producing more than 500 loaves of bread per day, supported by a delivery fleet serving customers across KwaZulu-Natal. She also envisions employing between 20 and 50 people, while establishing accredited training programmes that equip aspiring bakers and entrepreneurs with practical skills.

To achieve this vision, she hopes to secure support that will enable her to acquire permanent premises and move away from rented facilities. Owning a dedicated production site would provide the stability and infrastructure needed to expand and professionalise the bakery further.

Beyond building a successful enterprise, Shabalala is passionate about changing perceptions around entrepreneurship. She believes that business ownership should be viewed as an achievable path for everyone and that more opportunities should be created for emerging entrepreneurs to access accreditation, training, and support.

Through hard work, consistency, and a commitment to excellence, she has built a reputation based on quality products, professional service, and strong community relationships. Working seven days a week, she ensures that every product leaving the bakery reflects the values upon which the business was founded.

Her message to young people is clear: believe in your potential, stay focused on your goals, and avoid distractions that can derail your future. With determination, discipline, and perseverance, success is possible regardless of where you come from.
