NKANDLA, KWAZULU-NATAL – The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has officially commissioned a new Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) administration complex in Nkandla, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening food security, improving agricultural service delivery, and supporting rural economic development.
The facility was officially unveiled by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, alongside MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, during a ceremony attended by government officials, farmers, and community members.
The investment comes at a critical time, with the latest General Household Survey indicating that approximately 19% of households in the King Cetshwayo District, which includes Nkandla, experience moderate to severe food insecurity. Provincial leaders believe the new facility will improve access to agricultural support services while enhancing the productivity and resilience of local farming communities.
Constructed at a cost of R43 million, the modern administration block features office space, meeting facilities, and dedicated farmer support centres. The project was implemented by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure on behalf of the provincial government.
Beyond strengthening public infrastructure, the project delivered significant socio-economic benefits during its construction phase, creating more than 60 employment opportunities, including 45 jobs for youth and women through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
Addressing attendees during the official handover, Premier Ntuli described the development as a strategic investment in the province's agricultural future.
"This building is more than just offices. It demonstrates our commitment to bringing government services closer to our people and supporting the farmers who feed our province," the Premier said.
Speaking to farmers at the nearby Nkandla Municipality Stadium, MEC KaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised that the success of the project would ultimately depend on the quality of services delivered from the new offices.
She urged officials to prioritise practical support for both emerging and commercial farmers through improved access to mechanisation, irrigation systems, extension services, and agricultural markets. The MEC further called for greater investment in climate-smart agriculture to help farming communities adapt to changing environmental conditions while encouraging increased participation by young people and women in the sector.
