KwaZulu-Natal has cemented its position as a leader in healthcare education following the launch of South Africa's first Public Nursing College Specialist Nephrology Programme at the KwaZulu-Natal College of Nursing. The pioneering initiative marks a historic milestone, with the institution becoming the first public nursing college in the country and only the second institution nationally to offer the highly specialised qualification.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Nomagugu Simelane, officially welcomed the inaugural cohort of 20 specialist nephrology nursing trainees, who commenced their training this week. The programme has been introduced to address the growing demand for highly skilled renal healthcare professionals and to strengthen the province's capacity to provide advanced dialysis and kidney care services.
Speaking during the launch, MEC Simelane described the programme as a transformative investment in the future of public healthcare.
