KwaMashu School Receives New Sanitation Facilities Through Ukhozi Luyanakekela Initiative

KwaMashu, Durban – Learners and educators at Phumelela Senior Primary School in KwaMashu are celebrating a major milestone after construction company Icon PB officially handed over newly built toilet facilities, addressing one of the school's most urgent infrastructure needs.

The project was delivered in partnership with Ukhozi FM through its community outreach programme, Ukhozi Luyanakekela, an initiative aimed at improving the lives of communities across KwaZulu-Natal by connecting organisations and businesses with schools and communities in need.

The handover ceremony was attended by Ukhozi FM radio personalities, school management, learners, community members, and representatives from Icon PB, highlighting a shared commitment to improving learning conditions for children.

Speaking at the event, Icon PB representative Phila Dlamini said the company responded after the school's principal identified sanitation as the institution's most pressing challenge.

The principal explained that while the school has many needs, the top priority was the toilets. There were times when learners had to be escorted because the existing facilities were unusable. Female learners were sometimes forced to use the boys' toilets under supervision to ensure their safety.

As Icon PB, we committed ourselves to rebuilding the toilet facilities from the ground up. We also looked at other areas where we could assist the school. For us, the safety and dignity of children are paramount. Proper sanitation is not only about hygiene—it is about ensuring that every child can attend school with confidence, comfort and dignity," said Dlamini.

The new facilities are expected to significantly improve the school's health and safety standards while providing learners with a clean, secure and dignified environment conducive to learning.
